World Book Day celebrations at Morpeth Library

Northumberland County Council has marked World Book Day with a heartwarming intergenerational celebration as it launches a consultation asking residents to help shape the future of their libraries.

Children from Morpeth First School visited Morpeth Library and spent the morning with a local Age UK group. Sharing favourite stories and celebrating the joy of reading, they demonstrated how literature and libraries connect generations.

The event shines a spotlight on libraries as vibrant, inclusive community hubs. According to the latest government data, 1 in 4 UK adults engage with libraries annually, and in Northumberland, 60,000 residents are registered with a library.

The council’s consultation proposes changes to open hours and library technology, with an aim to make these spaces as efficient and accessible as possible.

For many, they are a lifeline. Age UK volunteer Kev Wilson hosts a weekly library group, and says: “I began my role with Age UK because I wanted to create spaces where people feel valued and connected. The library is so important for us because it gives us somewhere to come together and feel part of the wider community.

“People visit our group for all sorts of reasons, some to make new friends, others to find new hobbies in retirement. For many, this has been life-changing.”

For the children, the morning brought creativity and conversation, injecting energy into the library and bringing smiles to regular attendees. Nadine Fielding, Head Teacher at Morpeth First School, said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed their morning.

“As a school, we love visiting the library whenever possible. Today has been a wonderful way to show pupils that reading is something you carry with you throughout your whole life. It’s been amazing to see them share their enthusiasm and connect with the Age UK group through a mutual love of stories.”

Wendy Pattison, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism at Northumberland County Council, added: “Libraries are a fundamental part of our towns and villages. They are welcoming, trusted spaces that bring people together and provide far more than access to books.

“That’s why we’re encouraging residents of all ages to take part in our consultation. We want to understand how people currently use our libraries, what they value most, and how these spaces can continue to evolve to meet their needs. We also have a dedicated consultation for young people, because it’s hugely important that their voice is heard.”
