The family-run business, which operates a 100-acre freight-handling facility on Teesport in Middlesbrough, now goes through to the grand final of these prestigious awards, which takes place on 21 April at Hardwick Hall in Sedgefield.

A packed ceremony at Teesside University’s Olympia Building was hosted by Charlie Charlton of BBC Tees and guests were entertained by guest speaker Kevin Maguire, the Daily Mirror’s associate editor.

AV Dawson officially launched its innovative, state-of-the-art £6.5m automotive steel distribution centre in 2015, to support the ever increasing supply of steel coil into North East automotive markets and in particular to car giant Nissan in Sunderland.

The 102,263 square foot automotive store includes a rail link directly into store from the mainline, providing a streamlined service with four 30-tonne overhead cranes unloading from the trains directly into the store and onto trucks which deliver up to Nissan every two hours on a just-in-time delivery system.

The opening of this award-winning facility was the final phase of a 3-year £12.5 million master plan which enabled the company to grow more than a third and increase turnover in the last 12 months by 28%. The three-phase plan also included a £3.4m deepwater quay and a £2.6m intermodal rail terminal, which provides freight firms with a direct link to the East Coast Mainline.

Neil McShane, AV Dawson Quality Manager said:

“We’ve always tended to keep our heads down and just get on with business but we’ve received quite a bit of interest in our new facilities, particularly our automotive store. It’s fantastic for the team to be recognised externally for its commitment to innovation, quality and service excellence and to be part of such a prestigious event; standing alongside such great businesses and representing Teesside.”

Now in their fourth decade, the North East Business Awards are organised by the North East’s regional media, The Journal, and its sister paper on Teesside, The Gazette, in association with the North East Chamber of Commerce. The annual event aims to shine a spotlight on the best of the best within North East business, regardless of size or sector.  Other winners included Nifco UK, Labman Automation, Evolution Valves and ElringKlinger (GB).
