North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

VOLUNTEERS from the Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation have been helping Stockton’s elderly prepare for Christmas.

The teenagers from the club’s National Citizenship Service (NCS) donated decorations as well as annuals and 2018 calendars to Mandale House Care Home.

Devoted Middlesbrough FC fan, resident Billy Wilson was one of those who received a club calendar. He said: “That’s mint. I’ll keep it forever.”

The youngsters also collected treats from the town’s Tesco supermarket to donate to the home’s annual Christmas party.

During their visit, the residents inducted the 15-to-17-year-old volunteers into their favourite pastime, bingo, and made Christmas cards together.

One volunteer, Joseph McKenzie, provided entertainment by singing Christmas songs while the residents joined in.

Resident Irene Fleming spent time with Joseph. She said: It’s lovely the teenagers keep coming to visit us. Joseph is a very special person.”

Tom Readman, from the Middlesbrough FC Foundation, said: “The participants gained so much from this project. It has improved their confidence, independence and leadership skills.”

Alongside kind donations from the club, the home has been preparing for Christmas by decorating their 12ft tree, with resident Peter Wilson coordinating the task.

The fir was generously donated by the family of resident Irene McBride.

Michael Allen, home manager of Mandale House Care Home, on Acklam Road, Thornaby, said: “Friends and families of the home have been extremely generous in getting us ready for the festive celebrations.

“We can’t thank the Middlesbrough FC Foundation enough for all they’ve done for the home this year. Their NCS volunteers have paid multiple visits to our residents, who’ve loved every minute.

“We’re also very grateful to Irene McBride’s family for donating our Christmas tree, which came as a huge and very welcome surprise.”
