On Saturday 11 July Stockton Council, in partnership with The Reading Agency, will attempt to set a Guinness World Record title for the most pledges received for a reading campaign.

To become a ‘Record Breaker’, participants must pledge to read and encourage others to read over the summer. Those wishing to take part can visit Stockton Central Library between 9.30am and 4pmthis Saturday to pick up a Reading Challenge Pledge Card.

On Saturday there will also be a free family fun day at the library where families can test their skills against a range of existing weird and wacky Guinness World Records including a blindfold catching challenge, build the tallest paper cup tower or complete as many hula hoop spins in one minute!

The event is part of this year’s wider ‘Record Breakers’ themed Summer Reading Challenge, an annual event for young people aged four to 11 years old.

The national challenge invites children to read six books during the summer holidays, encouraging them into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence during the school break.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge has always been a fun and popular event for children andSaturday’s event is a fantastic way for people of all ages to get involved. This year’s exciting Record Breakers theme not only highlights some of the remarkable world records already held, but gives a chance for everyone to come together and help set a new Guinness World Record. Make sure you come along to make your pledge on Saturday.”

The Record Breaker theme brings together fact and fiction for young readers to discover some of the incredible real-life achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records books.
