British Basketball League: All-Star 5 Week 8

A number of teams have secured their BBL Cup Quarter Final berth over the last weekend, with all of this week’s All-Star 5 set to feature in the knockout rounds. The team includes two debutants from BBL powerhouse clubs alongside three returnees who are back after a month or so away.

John Mitchell – Newcastle Eagles
Newcastle’s big man dominated Manchester Giants on Sunday to secure his first appearance, hitting 26 points in just 24 minutes on 11-14 (78%) shooting from the field, while grabbing 11 rebounds to complete an impressive double-double.

Matt Scott – London City Royals
Royals’ do-it-all guard saw them through to victory over Surrey Scorchers with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a block. He shot 9-11 (81%) from two-point range and was fast out of the blocks as 13 of his points came in the first quarter, with Royals leading from tip to buzzer.

Nick Lewis – B. Braun Sheffield Sharks
The only Brit in this week’s team, Nick Lewis fired Sheffield to the top of the North Group as they beat Leicester Riders in a crunch tie to leapfrog them. Lewis had a weekend high 29 points, including 5-8 (62%) three-pointers, along with five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Kyron Cartwright – Leicester Riders
After making a number of appearances from the bench, Leicester’s point guard has cracked the starting five as he led the charge in Friday’s demolition of Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks. He shot 8-10 (80%) from the field on his way to 17 points, also handing out eight assists in just 24 minutes of play.

Cortez Edwards – Worcester Wolves
Cortez Edwards joins Brandon Peel as the only two players to have made three appearances so far this season, and Edwards has done so after beating Peel’s London Lions on Friday night in the capital. In an all-round showing he had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, including drawing enough attention to provide the key assist for an open Mark Hughes to make the game-winner.

Off the bench: Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan (London Lions), Sade Aded-Hussein (Newcastle Eagles), Jamell Anderson (Leicester Riders), Connor Cashaw (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Jordan Williams (Worcester Wolves), James Hawthorne (Surrey Scorchers), Callum Jones (Manchester Giants).
