Picture this! The iconic landscapes, buildings and people of County Durham are to be represented in a massive mural created using the words of the public.
Durham County Council, in its most ambitious public engagement project, is calling on everyone who lives or works in the county and those who visit to share their thoughts on why they love the area.
The messages received will be painted onto four large canvasses by artists Kristian Jeffrey and Kara Strachan. When brought together, the pieces will form one large artwork celebrating the very best of the county.
As well as contributing their messages, members of the public can see the walls taking shape during the summer half term week by visiting four host venues, including Beamish Museum, where Kristian and Kara will be working on the piece.
Once complete this unique piece of artwork, which is being developed as part of the council’s Celebrating Durham campaign, will go on display at locations around the county and further afield to showcase residents’ love for the area.
Cllr Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council, said: “This is the most ambitious public engagement campaign we have ever launched but we really want to show just how amazing and diverse our county is.
“It’s our places, communities, award-winning partnerships, cutting edge businesses and technologies, innovation and attitude that make us stand out from the crowd. This artwork will celebrate all of those qualities and attributes.
“And, of course, one of the best things about County Durham is its people so it’s really important that this project reflects their thoughts on what makes our area such a great place.
“I’m thrilled to be launching this initiative and I’m particularly pleased to have the support of Beamish and the other venues that will be hosting the wall during the school holidays.”

Members of the public can send their messages by tweeting @DurhamCouncil and using the hashtag #HelpDurhamShine. Messages should begin with the words ‘I love Durham because…’
