Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Down the Rabbit Hole with Alice in Sunderland

Screen Shot 2015-08-17 at 12.45.20SHOPPERS visiting Sunderland city centre this weekend should make sure they’re not late – or they could miss out on a range of Alice in Wonderland inspired prizes.

As part of a month of activities organised to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the classic children’s novel, the city’s Business Improvement District is moving the action to Market Square.

On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 (August) a giant grass throne will be in place, with visitors being given the opportunity to sit on it and to have their photos taken with Alice and the White Rabbit.

The photos will be shown on the giant screen and some lucky people will be picked at random to ‘win the ads’ that will also be shown on the screen.

Prizes on offer include a mini break to Amsterdam courtesy of DFDS and a whole host of other giveaways throughout the weekend including; luxury afternoon teas, family ticket to Sing-Along Frozen at the Empire Theatre, gift vouchers from high street retailers, sunglasses and dining vouchers from local restaurants.

As well as the chance to win prizes there will be plenty of activities for families to enjoy, including a rabbit petting zoo and a magician, along with lawn games and face painting.

This is the third event as part of the Alice activities, which have previously included a giant maze in Keel Square and an Eat Me, Drink Me event in Park Lane Village.

“We’ve been delighted with the response so far and everyone has fully embraced the activities. The ‘Wear all bonkers here’ events have given families something to do in the city centre for free during the summer holidays,” said Ken Dunbar, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID.

“We hope that lots of people will come along this weekend, with hopefully many of them leaving with some great prizes from local businesses.”

There is also a range of Alice-related events taking place during Sunderland’s Thursday late night shopping evenings, with free parking in council car parks from 3pm and at the Bridges from 5.30pm.
