A consultation event is being held next week to share information and gather views about planned improvements on the A191 (Whitley Road and Front Street).
The improvement scheme, which would be managed by Capita for the local authority, will reduce peak time congestion, particularly at the Tyneview Park junction.
It follows a successful funding bid by the council, supported by Capita, to the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.
The planned scheme involves:
- Improving the A191/Tyneview Park junction by the removing the current stagger.
- Creating two westbound lanes on the A191, from Tyneview Park to Coach Lane, by making better use of the existing road space. This will maximise the benefits provided by the recently upgraded Four Lane Ends junction.
- Providing enhanced cycling and pedestrian crossing facilities.
A drop-in event will be held at Blue Flames (Callerton Room), Whitley Road, Benton, on Monday September 28, from 2pm to 8pm.
Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member responsible for Housing and Transport, said: “I would really encourage residents to come along to this important event. As well as having a chance to find out first hand about what the plans are and why they are needed, members of the public will also be able to talk to staff and share their views on the scheme.”
It is expected that project will start in early 2016.
