THREE stunning displays from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are part of the line-up for this year’s Sunderland International Airshow (Friday 22 – Sunday 24 July).
An action-packed display programme on Friday, Saturday and Sunday includes returning crowd favourites as well as teams and aircraft displaying at Sunderland for the very first time.
Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “This fantastic three day event has something for everyone. Once again we have a huge selection of aircraft from fast jets to vintage military aircraft joining in the fun. Thanks to the team organising our event I am also delighted at the international feel to this year’s flying programme.
“We work hard to keep it as the largest free family event in the North East, if not the country. The quality of the teams wanting to come back here and teams wanting to display for their very first time is a great reflection on the quality of our event.”
Timings are to be confirmed but expected to fly on the opening Friday evening are: The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Red Arrows, RAF Typhoon and the pyrotechnic Twister Duo. The evening will close with the traditional firework display at around 10pm.
Among the teams taking part in the packed flying programme on Saturday and Sunday are: RAF Falcons, Royal Navy Black Cats, The Blades, Norwegian historic Flight MiG 15 and Vampires, OV-10 Bronco, Curtis P40 Warhawk and P51 Mustang and the stunning Fairey Swordfish from the Royal Navy Historic Flight.
Airshow Director Sue Stanhope added: “Each year we challenge ourselves deliver a fun-filled weekend of entertainment, both in the air and on the ground.
“This year has been no exception. Along with an action-packed flying programme we also have a new layout for our fantastic ground displays, children’s activities, live music and fairgrounds. I look forward to seeing everyone there enjoying a brilliant weekend”
