HARTLEPOOL COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION has partnered with Changing Futures North East to give families an exciting and cost effective half term alternative with the return of GameCon 17.
Now in its third year, GameCon features over forty gaming experiences, with everything from classic retro systems and arcade games to the very latest modern consoles, indoor racing drones and Virtual Reality sets. Organised by Hartlepool College Student Ambassadors and staff, GameCon runs at the College from Wednesday 31st May and offers three days of unlimited gaming. All proceeds go to local charity Changing Futures North East.
Jess Watson, community and volunteer organiser at the charity said: “GameCon has been a great example of young students in Hartlepool pulling together to put on a fantastic event for the local community. The money they raise allows our charity to continue working with local children and families to improve their relationships and futures.
“This event has directly changed the lives of numerous families over the past three years. It has been inspiring to watch Hartlepool students passionately work together to put on this event that welcomes everyone.”
The convention has something for everyone, from dedicated gamers to families and children. Games professionals and experts will also be attending for those interested in a career in the games industry or videogame history and technology.
Games of the future
In addition, there is an amazing chance to become immersed in Virtual Reality, including the opportunity to fly an X-Wing fighter in a spectacular Star Wars space battle, and also the possibility of meeting some movie characters from the 99th Garrison Star Wars Group.
GameCon organiser Mark Lee said: “We started in 2015 with a few machines, and the public response was amazing. Since then GameCon has gone from strength to strength. Last year we won an award for Best Youth Project in the North East in 2016. This year we wanted to go even better, with our biggest ever line-up of machines and activities.”
Retro gamers
Parents can rediscover arcade classics, play on legendary Nintendo and Sega consoles, and try their hand at every version of Microsoft’s X-Box and Sony’s Playstation. Vintage gaming computers are also on hand, from the ZX Spectrum to the Commodore Amiga.
Those with a competitive streak can take part in Guitar Hero duels, dance-offs and multiplayer racing and combat tournaments along with board games and card games, a library of retro games magazines to browse, refreshments and prize competitions.
