Life after BREXIT in North East – Day 1

The future prosperity of the North East of England post Brexit is the subject of a major one-day seminar to be held at Northumbria University on Friday 29 March.

The event called ‘Day One. After BREXIT’, has been organised by Professor Joyce Liddle and Professor John Shutt from Newcastle Business School, and will take place on the day the UK officially leaves the European Union.

The event brings together leading figures from the region, the wider UK and Brussels, to discuss how to respond to the challenges arising from Brexit in relation to the future of urban and regional development in the North and the UK to 2030.

Dr Nicola Headlam, the new Director of the Northern Powerhouse, will give a keynote speech to talk about rebalancing the UK and delivering for the North. She will be accompanied by academic experts from Newcastle Business School and Durham University discussing topics which include:

Professor John Wilson, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Business and Law at Northumbria University, explains: “This is an opportunity to look at the emerging issues after the Brexit vote and how we respond to the challenges which Brexit is creating.

“With volatile environments and changing policy developments there is a need for better research and development practice. In 2018, the activities of Local Enterprise Partnerships were re-assessed and re-evaluated, and new Combined Authorities are appearing in the North East alongside new agencies like Transport for the North, based in Manchester.

“We want to look ahead to 2030 and the next decade for urban and regional development with the public, private and voluntary sectors in the region. The workshop is an opportunity to bring together senior policymakers, leading politicians, and chief executives to discuss the existing wicked issues and problems ahead.”
