To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the national Summer Reading Challenge[1], five star housebuilder, David Wilson Homes North East, is helping to write the next chapter of education by encouraging pupils in Durham to take up reading over the summer holidays.
The housebuilder donated £250 worth of educational books to the youngsters at Neville’s Cross Primary School in Durham, situated close to its development The Drive at Mount Oswald.
Recent research shows that excessive use of social media by children has been linked to lower levels of literacy[2] and that picking up a book for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing[3] as well as helping to improve social connections and relationships with family, friends and peers.
Christie Edge, the Sales Manager from the nearby development The Drive at Mount Oswald, was delighted to visit the reception class at Neville’s Cross Primary School at the end of term. During her visit, she presented the new reading books to the children and highlighted the importance of reading over the summer holidays.
Hannah Gilmore, Acting Deputy Head at Neville’s Cross Primary School, commented on the donation: “We’d like to thank David Wilson Homes North East for the fantastic collection of new story books. The generous donation has really enhanced our reading resources in school and I know that the children will absolutely love reading them.”
Christie Edge, Sales Manager at The Drive at Mount Oswald, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to hear that our book donation has significantly contributed to Neville’s Cross Primary School’s reading facilities. It is so important to encourage children to continue to learn and grow over the summer break, and it is a pleasure to be able to assist with the education of pupils in the local area.”
The Drive at Mount Oswald is a stunning development, comprising of luxurious three and four bedroom homes. Situated less than two miles from Durham city centre, surrounded by picturesque woodland, nature trails and views, all within walking distance of the city, the development offers the ideal location for family living.
