Stone Technical Services (STS)- in Darlington- has seen the busiest start to the year for its restoration department since it was established 20 years ago.

STS Restoration has secured around two million pounds worth of work around the country.

The company has recently started work on a three-year project to restore all 64 historic chimneys at the Royal Courts of Justice. STS has worked at the site for many years on a range of projects, but this is their most significant to date.

STS Restoration has also secured a contract with Gateshead Council and Historic England to carry out restoration and conservation works at Crowley Dam in Winlaton, near Gateshead. The dam is located on the River Derwent and forms part of the historic ironworks of Ambrose Crowley, founded in 1697. As part of the archaeological and ecological project, STS has to meet strict conservation guidelines to preserve and protect wildlife in the area.

In Essex, STS Restoration is working at the 17th Century Audley End House and Gardens in Saffron Walden. The works, for English Heritage, include the refurbishment of the feature garden steps and stone masonry works.

STS is also working at St Godricks’s Church in Durham, replacing the fleur de lis and ridge tiles, as well as vital roof restoration works over the nave and surveys to the external crosses.

And in Hertford, STS Restoration has completed a full restoration of the balustrade at Mill Bridge.

STS this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Darlington brothers, Dave and Grahame Stone, established Stone Technical Services in 1998 and is based on Kellaw Road in Darlington.

The company has also recently completed projects with Handpicked Hotels, Nostell Priory, Jarrow Town Hall, Sunderland Empire, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Hall.

MD of STS, Dave Stone, said: “We provide very specialist services for a range of organisations. Our team is widely respected as historic conservationists and stonemasons around the UK and, in addition, we offer a full service from general maintenance to restoration and lightning protection.

“It’s great to see STS Restoration growing as we celebrate our twentieth year and we look forward to continually developing.”
