MANUFACTURING powerhouse Nifco UK has been named among the leading lights for apprenticeships in the country, in a list to be published in The Sunday Telegraph this weekend.

The Eaglescliffe based employer, whose MD Mike Matthews entered industry as an apprentice, has made the Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list for 2016, which is compiled annually and recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices.

The list was announced at the National Apprenticeship Awards, which took place on 20 January at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, and includes businesses such as Travis Perkins, Mercedes and Bond Dickinson.

Nifco was selected having been shortlisted in one of the National Apprenticeship Awards employer categories, showcasing the breadth of employers who now offer apprenticeships.

Commenting on the company’s entry in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list, Mike Matthews, said: “We’re extremely proud to have made this list.

“There are more than 5.5million businesses of all shapes in sizes in the UK, so being among 100 to be recognised nationally as leading the way in terms of our work to support apprenticeships really is a tremendous honour.

“We have, over the last five years, put in place a recruitment strategy that absolutely embeds apprentices into the business, and that gives them the opportunity to flourish and progress.  The benefits apprenticeships bring to Nifco and to the young people we appoint are reward enough for us, but it’s always nice when your effort is acknowledged outside of the business.”

Sue Husband, director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: “The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list 2016 demonstrates clearly the impact apprentices can have on an organisation.  Apprentice employers are creating opportunities for individuals to gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed, up to degree level, while working and earning.

“These Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers are making a difference to the lives of their apprentices by investing in their future. In return, apprentices are helping employers to develop a skilled, qualified workforce to build a stronger economy.  I hope the success of these Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers will mean more businesses across England aspire to follow their example and to find out for themselves how apprenticeships help to grow a skilled and highly qualified workforce.”
