Folkworks: Catrin Finch and Cimarron

Saturday 1 February 2020, 8pm

In 2007, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch met Colombian joropo band Cimarrón and embarked on an exhilarating tour of Wales. More than a decade later, Catrin and Cimarrón meet again to tour the UK.

Catrin Finch is a remarkable and fearless artist, one of the world’s leading harp players, whose career has featured both solo performances with the world’s top orchestras and, more recently, collaborations with leading world music artists, including Toumani Diabate and, most successfully, Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, with whom she forms “one of the most popular world music acts of this decade” (Tim Cumming, Songlines).

The six-piece Grammy-nominated Cimarrón perform joropo dance music from the cattle-rearing plains of the Orinoco, rooted in a deep tradition defined by the mestizo mixed heritage of African, Spanish and indigenous cultures, and led by harpist and composer Carlos Rojas.

Cimarrón make wild, untamed music that preserves the spirit of freedom found in one of the world’s most untouched regions. Fast paced and powerful, the music boasts impetuous singing, amazing stomp dancing and fierce instrumental virtuosity of strings and percussion.

Kacy and Clayton

Saturday 1 February 2020, 7.45pm

Kacy and Clayton are set to return with the album Carrying On on October 4th, 2019. The 10-song set was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and recorded by Tom Schick at The Loft, Wilco’s recording studio and rehearsal space in Chicago, Illinois.

Carrying On follows the international acclaim for their previous record Strange Country and 2017’s The Siren’s Song.

The music Kacy and Clayton make is inextricable from where they grew up. The second cousins sing about the kind of people you’d find in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan. The hills, barns, and remoteness of the area are in these songs, with a bittersweet acknowledgement that this music has taken them far from home. Their sound is equal parts homespun, coming from a family and community where playing music is an ever present part of social gatherings, and the rare country, blues, and English folk rock they obsess over and collect. It’s an arresting amalgamation of psychedelic folk, English folk revival and the ancestral music of Southern Appalachia.

Newman began recording in 1968 with a self-titled album. Throughout the 1970s, he released several other acclaimed albums such as 12 Songs, Sail Away, and Good Old Boys. He began composing and scoring for films in the 1980s, and his work includes all four Toy Story pictures, A Bug’s Life, Cars and Cars 3.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, the same year he was given an Ivor Novello PRS for Music Special International Award.

Newman has a knack for writing songs that are so attuned to what’s going on in the U.S. that they become predictive, articulating uncomfortable thoughts that are in the air but had theretofore gone unarticulated.” Vanity Fair

Newman also was presented with a PEN New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award in 2014. In 2018 he collaborated with Rex Orange County on his version of Newman’s You’ve Got A Friend In Me, and in 2019, in addition to Toy Story 4, he collaborated with Chance The Rapper on 5 Year Plan for the album The Big Day.
