Refurbishment will really work out for customers

North Tyneside Council is revamping the Contours gyms at Waves in Whitley Bay and at The Lakeside Centre in Killingworth.

As well as a lot of new fitness equipment being installed – including cardiovascular and resistance machines, and the replacement of the free weights – both will benefit from decoration and improved layouts.

Speaking about the investment, Cllr Eddie Darke, cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “Our gyms are extremely popular so we are continuing to invest in them to make sure they remain first-class facilities.

“Each of the council’s five gyms benefits from a refresh every few years – and now it’s the turn of those at Waves and The Lakeside Centre.

“This means we will have to close the gyms for a short period of time while the work is carried out but the other facilities at both centres – including the pools, classes and soft play – will remain open as usual.

“Our other excellent gyms at Tynemouth Pool, The Parks and Hadrian Leisure Centre will be open as normal, too.”

The Lakeside Centre will close from March 21, reopening on April 1. The gym at Waves will be closed slightly longer, from April 4 to 29, as the flooring will also be replaced.

Cllr Darke added: “As Waves will be closed a little longer, we’ll be running extra classes throughout this time and I’d encourage people to come along and try them out.”

The work at Waves is part of a wider £300,000 project – it also includes maintenance work to the roof and the airflow within the building.
