A special beacon will be lit in South Tyneside next week as part of nationwide celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Members of the public are invited to join the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Richard Porthouse, when he will light the beacon at the Lawe Top Beacon in North Marine Park, South Shields, at 8.30pm on Thursday 21 April.
The ceremony will include music from the Westoe Brass Band, who will play Happy Birthday when the beacon is lit.
The Mayor said: “As the Queen’s representative in the Borough it is an honour to be taking part in this ceremony to mark her 90th birthday and to celebrate Her Majesty’s life, her dedication to the Commonwealth and international affairs as well as the British Navy, Army and Air Force.
“I would encourage residents to join us at North Marine Park to see the lighting of the Beacon and to take part in this monumental national celebration.”
Members of the public are advised to arrive at the Lawe Top by 8.15pm for the beacon lighting at 8.30pm.
