TRIATHLETES across the borough are being encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible for the Redcar Sprint Triathlon.
Taking place on Sunday, July 31, the Sprint event is half the distance of a ‘traditional’ triathlon with a 750m sea swim – a rarity in the North East – a 20km bike ride along the Esplanade before finishing with a 5km run.
With space for 200 competitors, entries are open now for the Triathlon with early bird entries costing £42 if booked before Thursday, June 30, or £45 for entries after that which close on Sunday, July 24.
If you don’t fancy taking on the whole race yourself, relay entries are available with prices costing £5 extra on top of individual entries.
Cllr Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills & Leisure, said: “The Redcar Sprint Triathlon is always a popular event for triathletes across the region looking to build up to longer distance events. If anyone is thinking about signing up I would get a place sorted straight away because they get snapped up quickly!
“It’s also a great event for the family as well with a lot of areas to watch the triathlon as well as lots of other things to see and do on Redcar’s sea front.”
Rob Wilkins, the organiser of the event which is run by TriHard, said: “Redcar Tri is a great race and based as it in the centre of town on a summer Sunday the crowds are always massive, creating a brilliant atmosphere for athletes and spectators. It’s also very safe; the swim course runs parallel to the shore with plenty of safety craft, the bike section is on fully closed roads and the run is on footpaths away from traffic. I always look forward to this race.”
