FAMILIES heading into Sunderland for its Christmas light switch-on today (Tuesday 17 Nov) will be able to enjoy some late night shopping.
The Bridges shopping centre, at the heart of the city, is extending its opening hours until 8pm, in honour of the occasion and offering free parking between 5.30pm and 9pm.
The Christmas light switch-on, which was rescheduled due to poor weather, will now take place at Keel Square at 6.30pm, with The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Barry Curran and former X-Factor finalist Andrea Faustini, along with a programme of entertainment and fireworks.
Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, said: “We wanted to make sure that people making the trip to the rescheduled event have the option to take the opportunity to pop in and do a bit of Christmas shopping.”
Scores of shops will be taking part in the late night opening and the Bridges will also be open until8pm throughout the week from December 7 up until December 23.
During this time, shoppers will be able to park for free in the Bridges’ car parks from 5.30pm until 9pm, as an added incentive to come into the city centre.
