Time to Move; How to Choose Where to Live

Moving in search of new experiences, opportunities or just a change are some of the common reasons people move. From safety to the education system, there are so many factors to keep in mind when selecting the best place to live.

Before you decide on moving, think about the reason or reasons why you want to move. Here are some factors that can help you in picking the right place.

Affordability

Despite how much money you earn, your first concern should be to live comfortably and within your means. Affordability covers more than just household expenses; the price of consumable items such as groceries, differ from place to place. Can you afford to pay rent or the mortgage in the new place? A great tip; compare mortgages for different homes in one or different areas to get the best value for your money. There are also differences in the price of fuel, utilities like power and water, and taxes.

Job Opportunities

Employment opportunities vary from place to place, so take your time and research the different job opportunities available in your desired area. Analyze the industry you are in and see which place offers you the best chance of getting employed. For instance, if you are an investment banker, you are better suited to living in a city. For a teacher, employment opportunities are in plenty no matter where you move.

How much you get paid also varies from place to place. Most salaries are based on where the job is. Your salary may be higher if you live in an area where the cost of living is high. Ideally, do your due diligence before you settle on an area.

Crime Rate

No one wants to live in an unsafe place.  That said we cannot live in a utopian society where no crime takes place. So before packing up take a look at the crime rate and statistics of the areas you are considering. This can help you choose a safe place as you learn more about the safety of a town or city. If you have already picked out a place, visiting the police can help ease your mind. Ask around about the area and remember that even though an area is safe now, it might not be in the future. The long-term stability and future development potential of an area can be deciding factors on whether to live there or not.

Real Estate Value

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments you will ever make, so you want to seriously think about the return of investment. Since the real estate market is constantly changing, it is wise to look into the current home prices, the time it generally takes to make a sale and the resale value of homes.

Moving should be a well thought out decision. Weigh the pros and cons of what you are giving up and getting in exchange. If you are moving with your family, consider their needs before you settle on an area.
