Lay members needed for safeguarding boards

203“Critical friends” with an interest in keeping children and vulnerable adults safe are being sought to become members of County Durham’s Safeguarding Boards.

The Durham Safeguarding Adults Inter-Agency Partnership Board and Durham Local Safeguarding Children Board constantly review, develop and influence services, promoting the wellbeing of adults, and the welfare of children.

Both are seeking new lay members to bring a different and independent perspective.

The Boards’ independent chair, Jane Geraghty, said: “Lay members play a very important role in challenging the Boards”.

“They can bring a level of independence in seeking assurance that the Safeguarding Boards are making Durham a safer place for children, young people, families, carers and vulnerable adults within our communities.”

“Lay members are crucial in making the boards relevant.”

Both Boards are particularly keen to speak to anyone with an interest in the safeguarding of children and young people; with an interest in the safeguarding of adults with care and support needs; and who have experience in the work of the voluntary sector or community activities.

If you are interested in the work of the Safeguarding Adult Inter-Agency Partnership Board or Local Safeguarding Children Board, and you would like to know more about becoming a lay member, please contact the Boards’ Business Support on 03000 265847 (adults) or 03000 265770 (children)
