Learning Disability Week

Jun 17, 2017

This year Learning Disability Week will be taking place from 19 – 25 June 2017 to celebrate and raise awareness of people with a learning disability and their families.

In recognition of Learning Disability Week, The Pottergate Centre will be hosting an information day in the Northumberland Hall, situated in the Market Place Alnwick on  Wednesday June 21st 2017.

There will be a number of stalls for people to browse and gain insight into the work carried out by Northumberland County Council and people with learning disabilities within Northumberland.

Entertainment will be provided by RHYTHM STIX,  with a chance for a sing along and enjoy refreshments from the Pottergate Pantry pop up cafe, which will be staffed by people from the centre.

Learning disability affects the person in their everyday life.  It means that they require extra time or support to do things and may find some tasks or communication more difficult.  People with learning disabilities are also more likely to experience poorer health.  Most people with a learning disability are treated as ‘different’. They do not have the same control over their own lives as the rest of our society and face challenges and prejudice every day. However people with a learning disability often have unique talents and bring a fresh perspective.

Also the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick will be turning blue for the same week.
The tribute has been organised by The Northstar Centre and Border Links in Berwick, and The Pottergate Centre in Alnwick. The week-long transformation, from Monday 19th until Sunday 25th June will coincide with Learning Disability Week. It is hoped that the change will make people more aware of those people who have a Learning Disability and the effect that it has on families all over the country.

Northumberland County Councillor Veronica Jones, cabinet member for Adult Care and Public Health, said “We are delighted to support Learning Disability Week.  People with learning disabilities have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else. There is a need to support people with a learning disability to make whatever contribution they wish.”
