Raising a glass to the new uni year

ONE of Tyneside’s most popular venues is raising a glass to the start of the uni year with a menu of food and drink offers.

Osbornes, at Osborne Road, Jesmond, has introduced daily deals on everything from wings and whisky to pizzas and pints in a bid to help students stretch out their loans.

And the week gets off to a start with Monday Burger Madness – when diners throughout the day can feast on hand made burgers and fries for just £5.

On Tuesday, from 7pm until closing, selected pints, bottles, spirits, wines, bombs and food are priced at just £2 and each Wednesday, customers can tuck into full size chicken wings at just 45p each or five for £2, washed down with a dram of whisky at 30 per cent off normal price or a Jack Daniels and coke for just £2.50.

Pizza wraps, at £3 each, are the order of the day on Thursday, when the venue also turns back the clock to offer retro drinks, prices and music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s with its Throwback Thursdays.

In addition, Osbornes sister venue, Scalini’s is giving customers the chance to receive discounts ranging from 10 per cent off their bill to their entire meal free of charge.

In a similar system to that used in pubs and bars, diners are invited to push a button which will select one of four offers at random.

The offers apply across the menu and incorporate starters, main courses, steaks, pizza and pasta dishes, sides, salads and desserts.

The push the button happy hour – which also applies to drinks bought with meals – at Scalini’s, runs from noon to 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 6pm to closing on Sunday.

Matt Stephenson, manager of Osbornes, which can also screen as many as four live sporting events at the same time, said the initiatives have been specially designed with students in mind.

“Jesmond has a high student population and we know the first semester of the academic year is a particularly exciting time for them as they celebrate seeing old friends and making new ones,” he said.

“We also know how easy it is for them to make a huge dent in their loans very quickly, so hopefully these offers will help ensure they still have some funds left by Christmas.”
