Award winning Northumberland Hotel, Golf and Spa, Matfen Hall, is looking to revolutionise the game of golf with its innovative new event to break down some of the barriers linked with time pressures and in generating new interest into the traditional game.

On Friday 22 September golf enthusiasts of all abilities are invited to come together for a 6-hole round of golf and some light-hearted entertainment as part of the inaugural MatfenSixes event.

Instead of the usual nine or 18 holes, this six-hole course should take just over an hour to complete, with different activities at each hole including a BBQ, drinks, and good-natured competitions.

The concept was developed following the introduction of the GolfSixes tournament as part of the 2017 European Tour. Peter Smith, golf manager at Matfen Hall, said: “The European Tour introduced a Sixes tournament this year as part of their mission to embrace innovation and originality. We wanted to make this format accessible to people in this region.

“Having a shorter format serves as a light introduction to the game for juniors or people who are just starting out, while the activities make the game fun and engaging with plenty of opportunities for companies to network and socialise.

“We’re aiming to break down barriers and the stereotypes associated with golf, and are always looking for new ways to engage people with sport. MatfenSixes is ideal for anyone who just wants a quick round of golf with their friends or colleagues on a Friday night, regardless of their ability.”

Teams of four will make their way around the specially adapted 6 holes in the classic parkland landscape, playing best two stableford scores to count each hole for the team.

Players will be welcomed at the first hole with an announcement from John Harrison, European Senior Tour player and head PGA professional. They can then go on to enjoy a BBQ at the second hole, followed by a nearest pin competition, drinks, longest drive competition and finally a target competition with prizes on the final hole.

MatfenSixes has a rolling start from 4pm on Friday 22 September 2017. Entry is £60 per team and includes food and one drink.
