Gateshead bus users are getting brand new buses with free wifi, USB connections and next-stop-announcements – thanks to a £1.8m cash injection by the North East’s largest bus operator.
Go North East has invested £1.8m in buying 11 brand new, high-specification, environmentally friendly buses for its no. 49 bus services.
The new buses are now on the road.
The no. 49 services operate early till late seven days per week, providing a high frequency10-minute daytime service between Gateshead, Dunston, Metrocentre, Winlaton and Blaydon.
The services, which carry millions of people every year, provide key links for commuting, education, leisure and shopping and connect into other bus services at Blaydon,Metrocentre and Gateshead. The no. 49 also provides links on the Tyne & Wear Metro at Gateshead Interchange.
Go North East managing director Kevin Carr said: “We are investing heavily in new and upgraded buses to give our customers the best possible services. The £1.8m investment in new buses for the no. 49 route follows hot on the heels of a £1.6m investment in ten new vehicles for our Durham Diamond service.
“We do a lot of customer research and our passengers tell us often that they appreciate having free wifi, next stop announcements, comfy seats and being able to charge their phone on the bus.”
