A Cumbrian based hotel group has marked 10 years of ‘whodunnit’ mayhem with a Great Gatsby themed murder mystery night.

With ITV crime drama The Bay unveiling its complex plot lines against the backdrop of Morecambe’s historic waterfront, English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues is celebrating a decade of themed murder mystery events at its art-deco Midland Hotel.

Since 2009, the hotel has organised over 50 murder mysteries to entertain over 5,000 participating guests and visitors.

Working in partnership with award winning event organisers After Dark Murder, the hotel group has put on intriguing murder mysteries encapsulating a range of inspired themes. These have included ‘Are You Being Severed?’, ‘Death at Downturn Abbey’, ‘Treachery on the Titanic’ and ‘Fatality at Faulty Towers.’

The Midland’s latest crime thriller for would-be Hercule Poirots saw the recreation of the Gatsby Mansion in Long Island, with cracks starting to show in the lavish lifestyles of the 1920s nouveau riche.

Mark Needham from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, the general manager of the Midland Hotel, says: “The murder mystery nights have been immense fun over the last ten years and have created a lot of wonderful memories.

“The average number of guests per murder mystery event has been around the 100 mark which demonstrates their continuing popularity. We’ve covered Shakespeare and Dickensian themes through to the more contemporary Grease, Rocky Horror and Moulin Rouge.

“It’s exciting to see Morecambe’s waterfront at the heart of ITV’s latest gripping crime drama, and of course The Midland has been used in the past for filming episodes of the TV series Agatha Christie’s Poirot starring David Suchet.”

The Midland Hotel was designed to look like an ocean liner and built in a single year, opening in 1933. It has enjoyed a modern revival in fortunes since reopening in 2008 after an £11m refurbishment and is now run by family hotel group English Lakes Hotels, Resorts & Venues.
