Regulator deems Middlesbrough disability service as ‘Good’

middlesbrough-moving-forwardA supported living service in Middlesbrough that supports people with learning disabilities has been assessed as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of all health and social care services in England.

The Supported Living North East service, which is run by national disability charity Walsingham Support, was inspected under CQC’s audit criteria in November 2015.

CQC inspects services against five criteria – are they Safe, Caring, Effective, Responsive to needs and Well-led – and rates them as either Inadequate, Requires Improvement, Good or Outstanding.

In the report, the CQC inspector said: “People we saw were well presented and comfortable around staff. We saw staff talking to people in a polite and respectful manner. Staff interacted with people at every opportunity and we saw people were assisted by staff in a patient and friendly way.

“We saw people’s homes and bedrooms were individualised with their own furniture and personal possessions, and people had chosen the décor.”

Sharon Sharp, Locality Manager at the service, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the positive feedback received from CQC. Walsingham Support works to increase the quality of life and happiness of every person we support and this report is evidence of that.”
