THE HUMBLE apple was the centre of a celebration at a Northumberland care home as residents and staff marked the fruit’s national day.

A day of baking apple pies and enjoying a range of sweet apple drinks marked the day at The Oaks Care Home, on Durban Street, Blyth.

Several of the home’s residents got involved in making the pies before sharing their creations with others during their afternoon tea.

Residents Dennis Allen, Elsie Patterson and Jean Mills were among the bakers, alongside activities coordinator Natalie Brimelow and care assistant Jessica Maxwell.

Elsie said: “It was a really fun day.”

Natalie added: “We thought that the lovely healthy option would bring something fresh to the residents.

“Everyone enjoyed a slice of apple pie with their tea in celebration of National Apple Day.”
