The Environment Agency has been banging the drum about their work to reduce flood risk with school children in Newcastle.
They built youngsters at Gosforth’s Grange First School a wooden drum kit made out of trees they pulled out of the River Tyne to reduce flood risk.
Field Operations Team members Brian Hetherington, Terry Carr, Chris Mole and their team leader Ian Doughty also built mud kitchens for the youngsters to play in.
It follows a woodland area and story circle, raised beds, a composter and bird hide they’ve previously created for the school.
The work gives the team the opportunity to speak to youngsters about what the Environment Agency does and explain what they do to help during a flood.
Field Operations Team Leader Ian Doughty said: “We’re always delighted by the enthusiasm of the pupils and staff at the school and it’s a partnership that means a lot to us.
“When we first went to the school two years ago the pupils had never heard of the Environment Agency and now they know who we are and what we do.
“We regularly work closely with schools so they understand who we are and what they can do to stay safe in a flood.”
