Steven Udale, an actor, author, and celebrant from Sunderland, has made a name for himself as “The Storytelling Celebrant.” His journey into storytelling began unexpectedly during the lockdown when he noticed a need for calm and engaging content online. Rather than singing like many others, Steven turned to classic storytelling, beginning with well-loved tales such as The Three Little Pigs and Snow White. The response was overwhelming, and soon, people were requesting specific stories, leading Steven to develop his own original narratives.
Encouraged by this success, Steven authored two children’s books, both published in the British Library. His stories revolve around Ed, a young version of himself, who wears a magical bobble hat that helps him navigate tricky situations—something he wished for as a child. His books aim to teach young readers valuable lessons about responsibility, consequences, and kindness.
His storytelling talents have since reached classrooms across the North East, where his interactive sessions have captivated students. Teachers are often astonished at how his unique approach encourages even the most reluctant readers to participate. His ability to engage children and create an atmosphere of inclusivity has made his storytelling sessions a cherished experience in schools.
Beyond children’s storytelling, Steven has also found a profound role in celebrant services. His storytelling skills are beautifully transferable, allowing him to craft heartfelt and meaningful ceremonies for weddings and funerals. His journey into celebrancy began when an old friend reached out with an urgent need for a wedding officiant. Though unfamiliar with the role at the time, Steven stepped up to the challenge and soon realised he had a gift for narrating the most important moments in people’s lives. Now, he considers it a privilege to shape and present the final words spoken at a loved one’s farewell, ensuring their life story is honoured in a way that resonates deeply with family and friends.
Reflecting on his journey, Steven shares, “Storytelling, whether for children or in celebrant services, brings me immense satisfaction. There’s nothing quite like seeing the spark in a child’s eye when they connect with a story or knowing that I’ve helped a family honour their loved one’s memory in a meaningful way. It’s a privilege to do what I do.”
Steven’s background in acting has played a crucial role in his storytelling career. Having started in 2016 after years of charity work and fitness challenges, his foray into the arts was unexpected but rewarding. His journey included a surprise invitation to The Voice auditions, leading him to pursue vocal training, perform in musical theatre, and even grace the stage of the National Theatre.
As he continues to expand his reach, he remains active on social media and is even exploring TikTok as a platform for storytelling. His upcoming projects include the release of his third book, Sunni Sideup, featuring the series’ first female protagonist—a positive and inspiring character set to bring a fresh dynamic to Ed’s adventures.
