NORTH East school pupils put their best feet forward to raise money for the region’s leading dementia charity.
The nine-strong group, from Studio West School, walked from their West Denton site to Newcastle United’s St James’ Park ground, via Dementia Care’s day centre at Brunswick Village.
And their 10-mile trek raised £195.99 for the charity, which offers respite care, home support, day services and independent supported living housing for people with dementia.
The 15 and 16-year olds were taking part in a National Citizen Service programme, organised by Newcastle United Foundation, aimed at building links between young people and their communities.
As well as taking part in the sponsored walk, the group carried out some gardening and decorating at Dementia Care’s Brunswick site.
Dave Stevens, Chief Executive at Dementia Care said: “We’re very grateful to the pupils at Studio West, particularly as the weather was pretty dreadful on the day of the walk.
“We were also very touched that they chose us to be their nominated charity. Dementia doesn’t just affect those with the condition – it also impacts on their families and this sort of support from young people really is very much appreciated.”
Sam McLoughlin, business engagement manager at Studio West, said: “All students thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at Dementia Care and taking part in fundraising activities.
“Some of the students have family and friends that have been affected by dementia and so it is very real to them.
“They have now returned with a greater appreciation for the lives they lead and are keen to help out more in local projects.”
