Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Avast me hearties – as Captain Pugwash sails to The Word

A children’s storybook favourite is setting sail for South Tyneside for a day of adventures and family fun.

On Saturday 10 February, animated pirate Captain Pugwash will weigh anchor at The Word, South Shields, where he will be joined by the daughter of the man who created him.

In the first of two, interactive sessions for people of all ages, Isabel Ryan will give a talk about the character her father, John Ryan, created in 1950 and tell how he made the journey from comic strip to book, stage and screen.

Isabel will also give a slide show, demonstrate original hand-made animations from the 50s to the 70s and bring along original props from the television series.

Her talk will be followed by a Pugwash animation workshop with award-winning British animator Sheila Graber, who animated the children’s television series Paddington and is Visiting Professor to the University of Sunderland.

She will be giving visitors the chance to animate their own Pugwash-style movie via apps on their smart phones.

Original Captain Pugwash artwork – loaned by Isabel – can also be viewed at The Word’s popular pirate exhibition, Shiver Me Timbers, which draws to a close on 19 February.

“I’m delighted that Captain Pugwash is as popular now as he was when my father created him all those years ago,” said Isabel.

“And I can’t wait to give everyone a behind-the-scenes peek at this larger than life character and his shipmates.”

Captain Pugwash, a talk by Isabel Ryan, will take place between 1pm and 2pm and tickets cost £3. It will be followed by the Pugwash animation workshop with Sheila Graber from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, with tickets priced at £2.

Those taking part in the workshop will need to bring a fully charged smart phone and download either the Stop Motion Studio app for Mac or the Stop Motion Studio app for Android prior to the session.
