Two North East employees are taking on a once in a lifetime challenge – cycling all the way from Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in Cambodia to raise vital funds to fight breast, cervical and ovarian cancers.
Kay Lees and Gail McCamley, employees of North East IT solutions provider Perfect Image will be embarking on the epic 450 km bike ride this February to raise funds for the Women Vs Cancer charity.
The pair will join a group of around 100 fellow female riders from all walks of life as they cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia in just six days.
The event, organised by Women Vs Cancer, will raise money for three separate causes: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.
Along the course of the ride, Kay and Gail will cycle through some breath-taking scenery, visit ancient temples and experience the fascinating culture of South East Asia.
Kay Lees, HR Manager at Perfect Image, said: “This is a personal challenge to help me get fit, help me focus on the ‘what if’ instead of the ‘why us’ and also to raise money for Women V Cancer.
“Cancer is something I am sure we have all been touched by at some point in our lives and heavens forbid, may be touched by in the future. I can’t wait to take on this exciting once in a lifetime challenge – it’s going to be an amazing experience and a one made all the more special by being able to help raise money for such wonderful causes.”
Perfect Image donated £1,600 to help Kay and Gail reach their fundraising target and have supported the pair since they first expressed an interest in the event. The team have also been raising money from colleague by selling tuck shop sweets, holding cake bake sales, raffles and football fundraising cards.
Kay added: “We would like to thank Perfect Image and our colleagues for their generous donations, their excellent support and giving us the flexibility to fundraise and train. We’re really excited for the cycle ride and can’t wait to get started!”
Gail McCamley, Accountant, at Perfect Image, said: “Raising money to help support victims of cancer is a cause close to both of our hearts. Since signing up, the support and donations we have received has been overwhelming. While I’m a little worried about the distance, I am looking forward to hitting the road.”
Andrew Robson, CEO of Perfect Image, said: “Best of luck to Gail and Kay as they embark on this epic journey. Their determination really is an inspiration and we’re delighted to have been able to help them get off to a great start with their fundraising.”
