Charlie and Dawn Trevor, the husband and wife team behind luxury leather belt and accessories maker Equus Leather, have won the Made in Britain title at the Heritage Craft Awards.

The awards are hosted by The Heritage Crafts Association, which has Prince Charles as its president and promotes traditional heritage crafts in partnership with government and key agencies.

The Marsh Heritage Crafts Made in Britain award celebrates UK businesses that are flying the flag for British crafts and making a success of them.

Equus Leather, based in Winston, County Durham, was particularly recognised for the quality of its craftsmanship and its commitment to keeping production in-house rather than outsourcing it overseas.

The firm’s work in producing leather goods using traditional crafts and British materials was recognised by the judging panel as ‘outstanding’.

Equus exports its completely hand-crafted leather goods, including watch straps, belts and dog collars to over 60 countries across the globe.

It uses centuries-old, traditionally English techniques and materials from British suppliers including some of the most revered tanneries and bridle leather producers in the world.

Charlie Trevor, who has been making saddlery and leather goods since 1995, manages the creative and design side of the business, while Dawn handles the day-to-day running of the company.

Charlie said: “We’re delighted to have won this prestigious award, which is a testament to the hard work, time and effort we put into delivering quality products to the world.”

Dawn added: “Carrying traditional skills onto new generations is an important part of what we do and we’re hugely proud to have been recognised for it. We hope to continue keeping alive this precious part of our heritage for many more years to come.”

The award was handed out at the Heritage Crafts Association’s annual conference at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
