AN EXPLOSION of pink hit a Northumberland care home as residents and staff raised awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Now.

Pink clothes, wigs, drinks, sweets and decorations all marked the Breast Cancer Awareness Month event at The Oaks Care Home, in Blyth.

There was also a competition for a bottle of pink gin, with visitors, residents and staff invited to name a pug dog in a photograph.

Carer Natalie Brimelow’s suggestion of “Pugley” was voted the winner.

Staff wore a variety of pink clothing for the day, with carer Linda Palmer donning her pajamas, and activities coordinator Angela Hedley sporting a clown wig.

Resident Ann Lillico said: “I love seeing the staff dress up silly.”

Most of the residents enjoyed a G&T as well as pick n mix sweets including old favourites pink mice, shrimps, love hearts, gummy teeth and pink smarties.

Staff and family members also enjoyed the sweets selection for a small donation, including new additions Percy pigs and pink jelly brains.

The home raised £68 for Breast Cancer Now, which supports breast cancer research.

Ann Mielnik, home manager at The Oaks Care Home, on Durban Street, said: “The day was great fun, especially as it was for a good cause.

“Everyone enjoyed reminiscing about the sweets they used to eat, a blast from the past for some of us.”
