Commonwealth heroes add pedal power to Klondike

THE East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix has added some real star power to its line-up of top cycling talent with the addition of Commonwealth Games medallists the Tanfield brothers.

Charlie Tanfield, Commonwealth Games individual pursuit gold medal winner, and Harry Tanfield, Commonwealth Games men’s individual time trial silver medallist, will be among the more than 100 riders lining up alongside defending champion Chris Latham on Sunday’s race.

Councillor Carl Quartermain, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Communications, said: “Attracting riders of the calibre of Charlie and Harry Tanfield shows how, in just its second year, the East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix has generated a reputation as one of the best and most challenging races in the region.

“It’s going to be a fantastic day of fast and furious cycling and Chris Latham is going to have to give it all he’s got to retain his title in such high quality company.”

Councillor Mary Lanigan, Chair of race organiser the East Cleveland Villages Big Local, said: “Unless you’ve seen this kind of race close up, you have no idea how thrilling it really is.

“I hope to see Westgate absolutely packed with fans cheering on the riders as they hurtle through our borough. Let’s give them a day to remember.”

The East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix begins on Guisborough’s Westgate at 12 noon on Sunday 29 April.
