Divas can Dance with Pride

Cris HoweDivas of all ages are being given two more chances to don their dancing shoes at one of the UK’s largest, free, LGBT events.

Newcastle Pride, which returns to the city’s Town Moor from Friday July 17, will feature three days of live music and entertainment celebrating 45 years of world Pride.

As part of this year’s festival, which has a One Love theme, event organisers Northern Pride are hosting several specialist areas, each targeted at different interests or subsections of the LGBT community.

This includes the popular Women’s Zone and Dance Tent, both of which will host their own entertainment to supplement performances taking place on the Main Stage.

The Dance Tent, run for the second consecutive year by Newcastle nightclub Powerhouse, will welcome some of the city’s top DJs, including Cris Howe, Chris Charters, Michael Madison, MixFits and Chris ‘Skippy’ Ramsay.

They will be playing a mix of pumping house, electro mashups and electric dance anthems from 12.30pm until 7pm on Saturday July 18.

More relaxed DJ sets will be offered in the Women’s Zone on Sunday July 19, alongside spoken word and music by Holly Shadforth and Alix Bromwich Alexandra.

Before that, Pride’s visitors can enjoy an afternoon of alternative entertainment running in the Women’s Zone from 12.15pm until 7pm on Saturday July 18.

This includes performances by Caroline Mary, acoustic rock and country pop artist Jackie Sams, political and independent band Ajah UK and Newcastle favourites, Friggin Little Bits, who are making a rare public appearance to support Newcastle Pride.

Mark Nichols, Chair of Northern Pride, said: “Newcastle Pride is designed to cater for all members of the community and to give people the chance to come together in celebration of equality, acceptance and love.

“The specialist zones at this year’s event, including the Dance Tent and Women’s Zone, have also been created to allow visitors to bond over a common interest and offer alternative entertainment to that on the Main Stage.”

Newcastle Pride, which also features a Health Zone and family/youth area, is free to attend, with Main Stages performances by acts such as Belinda Carlisle and B*Witched taking place on Saturday and Sunday (July 18 and 19).

A limited number of VIP and Gold Circle tickets, priced from £10 per person, are also available to guarantee a viewpoint closer to the stage, with all proceeds being used to help keep the festival free in future years.
