IT’S time to get smart – and save money on household bills.
Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) has joined forces with Smart Energy GB to spread the word about smart meters.
They’re targeting the over 65s and those without internet access in Middlesbrough to help them find out about the benefits of the new money-saving technology.
As part of the Smart Energy GB campaign, every home will have the opportunity to upgrade to a smart meter, with no upfront cost, as part of the national smart meter roll-out.
Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters which enable accurate bills instead of estimates.
This takes the burden off customers and means they won’t have to take manual readings themselves.
The roll-out is an essential technology upgrade – on an unprecedented scale – to improve the UK’s energy infrastructure.
MEC aims to raise awareness of the smart meter roll-out by giving clear and impartial information to the public about smart meters and how they will work as well as empowering local residents to make informed choices.
They’d like to hear from anyone involved with or who knows of any community groups who work with the over 65s and those without internet access.
MEC Affordable Warmth Officer Amanda Martin said: “With household budgets stretched, we’re all on the look-out for savings.
“Smart meters can be a real asset to home owners, giving them more control over their energy use and providing more accurate billing.
“They have an in-home display that shows how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence, providing an easy way of saving energy use.
“I would definitely recommend people to find out more about how they could work in their home.”
The Smart Energy GB in Communities programme is being delivered by a consortium of charities. National Energy Action (NEA), Energy Action Scotland (EAS) and Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).
