SEOUL, October 25, 2024 – Today at its ‘N Day 2024’ event, Hyundai Motor Company’s high-performance N division unveiled RN24, a next-generation ‘Rolling Lab’ demonstrating the future possibilities of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs).

The annual ‘N Day’ event highlights Hyundai N’s relentless innovation and commitment to excel in high-performance, motorsport-proven technologies, and future vision. The event highlights Hyundai N’s three pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar. These pillars reflect the brand’s commitment to creating fun and engaging driving experiences that are uniquely possible with EV technology.

“Hyundai N is not just a brand but a representation of our commitment to innovation and high performance,” said Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President and Head of the Genesis and Performance Development Tech Unit. “RN24 is a testament to our bold ambitions for the future.”

As Hyundai N’s next-generation Rolling Lab, RN24 is the latest evolution in an innovative series of test vehicles that bridge the gap between motorsport technology and N production models. Originating with the RM (Racing Midship) series in 2012 and including EVs such as RN22e and N Vision 74, Rolling Labs serve as testbeds for high-performance technologies.

RN24 continues this legacy, pushing the limits of motorsports technology and shaping the future of the N brand’s electrified vehicles.

High power in compact lightweight chassis
RN24’s global debut showcases N’s vision for the near future. Inspired by the desire to fit the most powerful EV powertrain into the smallest possible package, Hyundai N applied IONIQ 5 N’s motorsport-capable 650 PS[1] dual-motor power electronics (PE) system. This was installed into a compact World Rally Championship-inspired EV chassis, resulting in a compact, lightweight and agile EV.

This Rolling Lab is not just a test vehicle; it’s a platform for initiating new conversations about next-generation high-performance EVs. It reflects Hyundai N’s daring spirit to continue to explore new ways to improve the electric driving experience — not just by increasing power and speed, but through a meticulous focus on drivability and precision.

RN24 is powered by the PE system from IONIQ 5 N. A redesigned battery pack retains the production model’s 84 kWh capacity but allows for a 340 mm shorter wheelbase, bringing this down to B-segment size, comparable with Hyundai Motor’s i20 N Rally1 Hybrid World Rally Championship (WRC) competitor.

WRC-inspired suspension and motorsport technology
RN24’s chassis system boasts a newly designed WRC-style suspension setup with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes.

This Rolling Lab is equipped with the WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system. This advanced system empowers drivers to adjust PE Power, Acceleration Sensitivity, Regenerative Brake Sensitivity, and PE Power Balance using steering wheel buttons. This functionality mirrors the control features found in Hyundai WRC challengers. Furthermore, RN24’s battery and motor cooling performance are ensured by modifications to IONIQ 5 N’s advanced system, and extra agility is achieved by a faster steering setup that delivers rally car-level response.

The vehicle features an external high-output sound system, with two side speakers in addition to IONIQ 5 N’s N Active Sound+ setup. RN24’s soundtrack is augmented by a rear fender design that acts as a soundbox, enhancing the sound experience and creating an immersive soundtrack for fans that complements the vehicle’s high-performance capabilities.

Among RN24’s many cutting-edge motorsport technologies, its ‘Rally Mode’ motor torque control is a key differentiator. Like Hyundai N’s four-wheel drive system used on the i20 N Rally 1, this setup helps optimize the distribution of torque to all four wheels. The performance of the i20 N Rally 1’s mechanical technology is simulated by RN24’s ‘Rally Mode’ electronic motor torque control, streamlining the system in terms of complexity and cost for a more realistic application in future production cars.

The e-Handbrake is another technology inspired by Hyundai N’s 10-year history in the WRC. It helps reduce weight by eliminating the need for physical brakes used in processes such as side brake preheating, and hydraulic brake installations that were used previously. Hyundai recently tested this innovative technology on a stage of the WRC’s Central European Rally.

RN24 is defined visually by its highly rigid, exoskeleton-style exposed roll cage. Inspired by WRC concepts, this not only ensures occupant safety but also adds to the vehicle’s overall performance and stability during high-speed maneuvers.

The application of N Performance Parts includes Elantra N 19-inch matte black forged wheels that add to the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal and contribute to its performance.

In addition, RN24 is fitted with a spoiler from Hyundai Motorsport’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models. This spoiler enhances aerodynamic performance, improving agility and stability. RN24 also implements 3D-printed gussets for better rigidity and weight reduction.

This combination of innovative features defines RN24 and Hyundai N’s approach to design, technology and performance, pushing the boundaries of electric motorsport technology.

“RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritizing the driving experience rather than spec numbers,” said Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group. “This Rolling Lab proves that there remains untapped potential for high-performance EVs and with new technologies ahead, there is much to look forward to.”
