Drivers will benefit from an improved road surface when work starts today (Monday 26 October) to resurface 7.5 miles of the A66 in Darlington.
Contractors for Highways England will resurface the A66 east of Little Burdon roundabout and will be installing 23 lamp posts at the junction. The majority of the work will take place overnight from 8pm until 6am.
Highways England project manager Derek Dobinson said:
When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along the stretch of the A66 from Little Burdon to Long Newton in Darlington.
Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic and residents is kept to a minimum, and we’ll be using a contraflow system on both sides of the carriageway to keep vehicles running in both directions on the dual carriageway while we resurface the other side.
Work will start to resurface the eastbound carriageway on Monday. A night-time contraflow system will be in use with traffic travelling in both directions on the westbound carriageway. During the day traffic will return to using both lanes of each carriageway as usual.
The contraflow will be moved on to the opposite carriageway later in the year once the eastbound resurfacing has been completed. The contraflow system will be lifted over Christmas.
Work to replace 23 lamp posts around Little Burdon roundabout will take place during the day between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Lane closures will be in place from Monday.
Resurfacing work will continue around the roundabout from Thursday 7 January and the whole project is due to be completed by Friday 15 January.
