NORTH East knitters have cast on and let their true colours shine to create a range of woolly wearables for an unusual type of shopper.
Members of South Shields knitting group The Materialistics headed to intu Metrocentre this month to add their yarning and darning skills to the centre’s Fashion Month.
But, rather than create knitted items for people, the three-strong group’s task was to create woollen scarves, skirts and accessories for the 13 silver statues originally placed around the centre to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
And, in keeping with the theme, the knitters worked with a rainbow of colours and shades to create garments, which will adorn the larger than life-size statues until 31 March.
“Over the coming weeks we will be shining a spotlight on fashion through our Fashion Live 15 event – and this year’s theme is colour,” said intu Metrocentre marketing manager, Helen Atkinson.
“We thought it would be nice to give our ‘silver people’ a new lease of life during our Fashion Month and The Materialistics have certainly risen to the challenge with some fabulously colourful creations.”
Knitter Sue McBride, who took part in the project, said: “We do quite a lot of exhibition work but we’ve not done anything like this before and we’ve really enjoyed it.”
The Materialistics were joined by intu Metrocentre general manager, Patsie Beaton, who said: “It’s been great fun and I’m very pleased our silver statues will be able to join in with our Fashion Live event.”
As part of Fashion Live 15 intu Metrocentre is also holding a four day fashion extravaganza, from 26 to 29 March, showcasing clothes from retailers within the centre.
