Labour has strengthened its grip on South Tyneside Council, taking all 18 seats that were contested across the Borough.
The overall turnout was 33.8 per cent, compared to 58.8 per cent in 2015, with 38835 votes out of a total electorate of 114981.
The highest turnout was in Cleadon and East Boldon with a turnout of 47.5 per cent and the lowest turnout was in the Biddick and All Saints ward, where 26 per cent of the electorate chose to cast their vote.
Three new faces joined the Council. These were Joan Margaret Keegan who was elected as the new Labour councillor for the Monkton ward, Liz McHugh who represents Labour in the Hebburn North ward and Labour Councillor David Townsley who takes over from Conservative Councillor Jeff Milburn in the Cleadon and East Boldon ward.
The new political make-up of the Council is: Labour – 53 and one Independent – Putting People First.
