Mayor Calls on Support for Poppy Appeal

poppy_appeal_boxesMIDDLESBROUGH’S Elected Mayor Dave Budd is asking the town’s residents to support the 2015 Poppy Appeal.

Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion’s work through the Poppy Appeal.

The Appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign and the 2015 Poppy Appeal will be launched nationally on Wednesday, October 21.

The Poppy Appeal makes it possible for the Legion to help Armed Forces families with £1.7million every week in direct welfare support – £90m each year, answering more than 165,000 calls for help.

Mr Budd said: “The Poppy Appeal is a long established charity that assists not only those who serve, but the mothers, fathers, partners and children of service personnel past and present.

“Middlesbrough has a proud history of support for our Armed Forces and we should continue that in any way we can.”

Mr Budd has put his signature to a supporting letter for the charity co-signed by the Mayors of Stockton, Redcar & Cleveland and Hartlepool.

Volunteers are always welcome as pressure on the Legion’s services grows year on year.

The organisation would like to hear from individuals, volunteer groups and organisations who might consider organising this year’s Appeal in the Middlesbrough area.

Anyone over 16 years of age can help. Just call the Legion free of charge on 0800 085 5924 or email poppypeople@britishlegion.org.uk.
