The Mayor of South Tyneside has recognised the work of two of the Council’s Waste Team members for going the extra mile to help the Borough’s residents.
Lawrence Pettimore and Lawrence Baines from the Waste Team, at Middlefields in South Shields, were invited to a special meeting with the Mayor and the Mayoress to thank them for going above and beyond.
The bin men were busy on their normal rounds in South Shields when they saw a couple, Mr and Mrs Rowe, having difficulties with their bins in the high winds which resulted in an accident with their garage door. The crew stayed with them while an ambulance arrived and returned later that day to make sure they were ok.
The actions of the Waste Team members were highlighted in a letter to the Council from Mr and Mrs Rowe thanking them for their help and concern. The two men were then invited to the Mayor’s parlour to receive special thanks from the Borough’s first citizen and were presented with whisky tumblers.
“I am very proud of the prompt actions taken by both members of the Waste Team and their concern for the welfare of local residents,” the Mayor said.
“It was heart-warming to read the letter from Mr and Mrs Rowe commending the two members of the Waste Team for going out their way to help the couple when they were in trouble. The Mayoress and I wanted to thank the team members for demonstrating how every day the Council’s staff work to help residents across the Borough.”
