National recognition for Sunderland’s digital transformation

Sunderland City Council is celebrating the announcement of not one, but two nominations for digital leadership and city-wide digital transformation, placing Sunderland firmly in the top ten leading smart cities across the UK.

Already confirmed as one of the Digital Leaders 100 (DL100) List, today’s shortlist nomination means that Sunderland City Council’s Chief Executive, Patrick Melia, has made it into the top 10 in the Digital Leader of the Year 2020 category, and the city has been shortlisted for Smart City of the Year 2020.

The Awards, now in their seventh year, are due to take place on Thursday 15th October in Leeds. The event recognises and reveals the exceptional achievements of the UK’s leading Smart Cities as well as the outstanding efforts of the digitally focused individuals that lead them.

The Digital Leaders programme recognises that strong leadership plays a critical role in driving forward digital transformation across UK cities. The Digital Leader of the Year award is for an individual whose actions have made them stand out over the past year as a catalyst for change in their sector.

Similarly, the award for Smart City of the Year recognises places that have advanced their smart agenda fastest and furthest in the past year, making use of data and technology to generate sustainable economic development, creating efficiencies and enhancing quality of life for people living and working there.

Patrick Melia, chief executive at Sunderland City Council, said: “I am honoured to be recognised amongst some of the UK’s principal leaders of digital transformation.

“The past year has seen us take huge strides towards some ambitious goals, fast becoming one of the leading Smart Cities across the UK. Our digital infrastructure will be key to how Sunderland recovers from the current Covid-19 pandemic, meaning that this work with partners in the public and private sector is now even more important.”

Patrick’s was shortlisted in recognition of his ambition for Sunderland to become a connected, international city with opportunities for all, and his understanding that next generation fibre and mobile infrastructure is vital to connect people and organisations and deliver transformational change.

The council’s lead in employing a 5G WiFi network in less than three months to benefit some of the most disadvantaged, ensured that Sunderland’s Smart City programme delivered immediate benefits for people in those communities.

Patrick added: “To receive acknowledgement of our efforts as a council-led team working in partnership with numerous valued experts, in the form of a national award nomination for Sunderland, is both humbling and deeply deserved by the whole team.”

The city’s focus on rapid implementation has proven to be a key progressive factor in Sunderland’s success story. As one of the first cities in the UK deploying a 5G ready operational network to deliver ultrafast Wi-Fi to key city centre locations, makes the city of Sunderland smarter and opens up a world of opportunity for individuals and businesses alike.

From digitally enabling coding clubs in schools, to assistive technologies within social housing stock and immersive experiences in the High Street; the council’s agile approach has enabled the delivery of a range of transformational use cases. Planned expansion phases will bring in SMEs and public/third sector bodies to stimulate the increase in digital connectivity across Sunderland.

Amidst a wealth of entries showcasing some of the very best smart strategies from across the country, Sunderland has been recognised for its rapid progress as a leading UK Smart City with underpinning transformational leadership from the chief executive, Patrick.

Patrick continued: “It’s an exciting journey and I look forward to continuing to play my part in positioning Sunderland at the forefront of digital revolution across the UK and beyond.”

The DL100 (Digital Leaders 100) List is created by public vote and celebrates the teams and individuals who are working hard behind the scenes to secure the UK’s Digital Transformation.

Following today’s announcement of shortlisted individuals, organisations and cities, the public vote is now open to help determine the final order and category winners. Vote for Sunderland on the DigiLeaders100 website.

BYD announces voestalpine as major supplier to its first European car factoryAustrian company will produce steel for plant in Szeged, Hungary Facility will be ready to start manufacturing vehicles by end of 2025 Regional supply base key to policy of localised production New V2H pilot project also confirmed for Austria BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, is pleased to announce that it has reached agreement with voestalpine, a globally leading steel and technology group, to supply its new passenger-car factory in Hungary. Confirmed by BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li in Vienna, alongside voestalpine CEO Herbert Eibensteiner, the agreement covers sheet steel, and makes voestalpine one of the first confirmed supply partners for the Szeged facility. The company was chosen by BYD because of its geographical proximity to the factory in Hungary, and the high quality and excellent reputation of Austrian steel. The agreement marks a significant step in BYD’s localisation policy, as the brand continues to expand its operations across Europe. BYD will be on sale in 29 European countries by the end of 2025, and its sales network will comprise more than 1000 retail stores. In addition, BYD recently committed to a new European headquarters in Budapest, along with its first bespoke European R&D centre, also in Hungary. The announcement of voestalpine as a supplier demonstrates how BYD is committed to sourcing high-quality, competitive local suppliers to support its stated goal of producing cars in Europe, for Europe. It continues to meet with hundreds of potential suppliers in key markets as it ramps up preparations for the start of European production. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li commented: “BYD has always been clear that we have come to Europe to stay in Europe – and to produce here. Our commitment to the European market is strong and as we’re showing here, it goes far beyond pure car sales. We’re applying a long-term vision here, with the goal of being seen by consumers, within the next five years, as a European manufacturer. Our factory in Hungary is at the heart of this process, of course, so every local supplier we announce is another significant step. I’m delighted that we will be working with voestalpine, a company that has a long history of innovation and a commitment to decarbonisation and sustainable CO2 reduction.” Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO voestalpine, said: “With its high-quality steel products, voestalpine is an important partner for the global automotive industry. We offer renowned automotive manufacturers and suppliers reliable and sustainable solutions, thanks to our unique combination of technology and materials expertise. Our products can be found in almost all automotive assemblies – from the body and powertrain to safety-critical components. Starting this fall, we will be supplying BYD – a Chinese technology company that manufactures in Europe – from our location in Linz. We are confident that this initial order for the production of high-quality flat steel for car bodies and outer panels will lay the foundation for a long-term partnership.” BYD has been enjoying strong progress in Austria, becoming the number one brand with private BEV buyers (and enjoying a 15% share of that market). Its overall market share in the country now sits at 2.5%. To further support this success, BYD has also announced that Austria will become the European Union pilot market for the implementation of V2H (Vehicle to Home) technology in its vehicles. Austria has been chosen for this project, which will be managed in conjunction with a local partner, because of the country’s high penetration of solar energy (more than half of all Austrian households are supplied with solar-panel energy). Customer demand is also strong, with BYD dealerships reporting that half of customers are already asking when V2H will become available, to help them maximise the efficiency of solar and reduce their energy costs. More specific details of the project, including a timeline, will be announced shortly.
