Wednesday 11 December, 8pm

Half gig, half dance show and half panto! Join the BBC Award Winning team of musicians and dancers for 150% of the very best festive live music, song and dance!

It’s Christmas Eve and the regulars of The Olde Fighting Cocks are excited about the night ahead; it’s going to be the Folk & Hip Hop dance party of the year! To their dismay the landlady, Jasmineezer Scrooge, has more profitable ambitions and is preparing to launch her new business, the Oompah Techno Bar! Cheap alcopops, luminous lighting and mind-numbing bass beats are all in danger of alienating the local community and ruining Christmas. Fortunately, some insightful souls are at hand to lead her back to her senses.

Featuring ‘folk powerhouse’ The Demon Barbers; artists from Breaking Tradition Dance Company; a new seasonal repertoire and a ‘slightly unhinged’ approach to their family friendly stage shows, they are ‘guaranteed to raise weary spirits and send an audience home smiling.’ (The Telegraph)

Judy Collins

Tuesday 14 January, 2020, 8pm

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable song writing, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism.

The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of Send in the Clowns, a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammy Awards.

Judy began her impressive music career at 13 as a piano prodigy dazzling audiences performing Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos, but the hard luck tales and rugged sensitivity of folk revival music by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger seduced her away from a life as a concert pianist. Her path pointed to a lifelong love affair with the guitar and pursuit of emotional truth in lyrics.

Throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and up to the present, she has remained a vital artist, enriching her catalogue with critically acclaimed albums while balancing a robust touring schedule.

Judy Collins is as creatively vigorous as ever, writing, touring worldwide, and nurturing fresh talent. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart.

Folkworks: Chris Wood

Monday 9 March, 2020, 8pm

In a world of soundbites and distractions Chris Wood is a truth seeker. His writing is permeated with love and wry intelligence, uplifting and challenging as he celebrates the sheer ‘one-thing-after-anotherness’ of life. Tom Robinson and Chris Difford are fans while Stick in the Wheel and The Unthanks look to him as an influence.

Winner of six BBC Folk Awards, he’s played with The Royal Shakespeare Company and was a key member of The Imagined Village along with Billy Bragg and Martin Carthy. A wise and soulful craftsman, his concerts are a cliché free zone.

Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of song writing. Very political, but at the same time full of compassion, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. He’s good, quite probably the very best we have today, and we need him more than ever.” – fRoots Magazine
