Possible disruption as Wharton Park restoration continues

203Drivers are being warned they face possible disruption as work continues on Durham County Council’s multi-million pound restoration of Wharton Park.

Essential repairs to the walls of the park mean temporary traffic lights will be put in place on Durham’s North Road, 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday, from November 16 (after the Lumiere festival is finished) until Christmas.

Some parking bays will also be suspended.

Wharton Park is currently closed for the revamp, which has been funded by a £2.45m grant from the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Fund, and money from the Durham Area Action Partnership.

Improvement works include a new heritage centre and play areas, an improved amphitheatre, miniature car track, and enhanced entrance features and footpaths.

Phase one of work on the walls will take place between mid-November and Christmas.

A second and third phase of work will commence after the festive period, with all of the wall repairs completed by March, in time for the spring re-opening.

For more information about the work please contact the Project Manager on whartonpark@durham.gov.uk or find us on Facebook at Wharton Park.
