A student from Redcar & Cleveland College is shaping her own future as she sets out plans to launch her own business.

Abbie Lewis, 18 from Redcar, has been studying level 2 hair & media make-up at the College since September 2016, and has now made the decision to open her own make-up studio in Redcar.

Abbie said: “Deciding whether to open my own studio or stay in education for another year and gain my level 3 qualification was really tough but I’m ready to take the leap and get my career started.

“I’ve always wanted to work in the make-up industry and studying at Redcar & Cleveland College has allowed me to build up my skills and my confidence. My tutors are great and have really helped me to find my feet, while challenging me to try new things and step out of my comfort zone.”

While at Redcar & Cleveland College, Abbie has participated in several competitions. She received a regional silver medal for bridal make-up before going on to represent the College at the National Student hair and make-up competition in Blackpool.

Abbie was also recently nominated at the College’s Celebration of Achievement Awards for hair & media make-up student of the year.

Abbie added, “This was a huge confidence boost. I’d never have put myself forward if it wasn’t for my tutor, Emma Fletcher, but I’m so glad I did.”

With her new studio set to launch in July, Abbie is hoping to take future students under her wing, providing valuable work experience placements for future make-up and beauty students at the College.

AL Professional Make-Up Studio will be based on Station Road, Redcar and will offer beauty treatments, make-up applications and make-up lessons.
