School takes part in week of activities to tackle bullying

Pupils at a County Durham school took part in a range of activities to stamp down on bullying during a national week of action.

Esh Winning Primary School began Anti-Bullying Week with an Odd Sock event, where the whole school had the chance to express themselves and encourage children to appreciate individuality and uniqueness.

Later in the week, the school council spent their lunch time talking to other pupils about what it means to be a good friend.

As part of this, they were asked to write a pledge about how to be a good friend and have their photos taken holding their statement.

Community officers from Durham Constabulary also visited the school to work with the children on anti-bullying, while Y6 created a mini-documentary about how to respect others. This documentary was shown at the end of the week before the whole school moved outside to release their pledges with a balloon launch.

Head teacher Caroline Hodgson said: “Bullying can have a significant impact on pupils and their achievements in school and is something that no child should have to go through.

“This week of action helped spread the message that everyone should feel valued and included in school life without fear of bullying and allowed all of our pupils to celebrate what makes them unique.”
