THE search is on for a community hero who has made a real difference to life in Middlesbrough.
The town’s Citizen of the Year Award is an annual celebration of good citizenship and public service – and nominations close on Friday, December 29.
Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd will present the prestigious annual award to someone who has made a truly outstanding contribution to their community and the town as a whole.
And it’s up to local people to put forward the names of those they think most deserve one of the town’s highest honours.
Suitable candidates might include a worker or volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in their dedication to helping others, and whose tireless work or acts of kindness have made a real and lasting difference to the lives of those around them.
This year’s winner will follow in the footsteps of current Citizen of the Year Tony Whitby who received the accolade in recognition of his tireless commitment to grassroots sport.
Mr Whitby founded the Middlesbrough Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) to offer boxing opportunities to young people from the local community, encouraging discipline, respect and healthy lifestyles and offering alternatives to crime and anti-social behaviour.
Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd, who will present the award in the new year, said: “The Citizen of the Year Award is an annual celebration of the truly outstanding contribution made by those who are dedicated to making the town a better place in which to live and work.
“The winners are put forward by the people of the town, as a tribute to the difference they have made to the life of those around them, and to the life of the town as a whole.”
Entries will be considered by a panel of judges representing the public and private sectors in the town.
